Some times a teacher will tell you straight up what these are, other times you just have to pay attention to the things that they emphasis in class. These are the things which are likely going to come up in exams. Also finding out what kind of learner you are and studying using techniques specific to this.

Communicate with your teachers! Ha I went from straight F's to straight A's in 2 weeks cause I talked to my teachers and they let me redo things plus extra credit.
