Steriotypes??

Why do people have this belief that louisiana is nothing but low class, hicks?

Like we are all like the movie, the waterboy, portrays us?

As much as stereotypes are wrong, they are around because that person existed at some time or another. I’ve been to Tennessee, it’s a beautiful place. Everyone was friendly, and they looked more or less like everyone at my home did, a bit different of an accent, but that was about it. We go to a state park there for a hike, and there is the family that is straight off of Jed’s farm. Bad teeth, rail thin, thick, thick southern accents, in a big truck with the confederate flag. I mean seriously I couldn’t make this crap up. We were actually shocked to see how hickish they were. I really figured it that stereotype was just a joke, but man was I wrong. Could they have been nobel physicists? Maybe, but I doubt I was off with that one.

That is just an example. There are some people who maybe believe that every person in the south is like that, they are ignorant. In most cases life will correct them. Just make sure you’re not enforcing a stereotype in your interactions with people who you are not familiar with. You’ll dispel a lot of the myths out there just by doing that.

I don’t think that at all, it’s like me I live in the cotswolds in england and everyone always thinks I’m a rich toff, lol! I think people sterotype because they do not have the knowledge to jugde correctly, so fall back on the images portrayed by the majority in society.

Answer #8

I live in West Virginia and I’m sure everyone has heard of the stereotypical hicks with six teeth that marry their cousins and have “relations” with sheep. LOL I figure there are people like that, in West Virginia, Louisiana and everywhere else in the country. Why Appalachian and Southern states take the brunt of these jokes, who knows. It had to of gotten started somehow and now that’s how we’re stereotyped. Like dollyknockers said, if people don’t know what other states and countries are like from their own first hand experiences, they just assume it’s like what they saw on tv or heard in jokes. Oh well. I’ll hold my West Virginian head high and you hold that purty lil Louisianan head the same. :)
