Sometimes younger girls can experience hormone imbalances when they are young, causing completely strange period patterns. I had a friend who got her period at 16 for a week and then didn’t get it again until two years later!

Polysistic ovaries can be extremely serious so make sure that your doctor is testing your properly, if you are not sure, you can ask your doctor to be referred to a specialist, or a gynecologist (I know its daunting and eww but I’ve been a couple of times and its really fine).

Home pregnancy tests are unreliable, you need to go back to your doctor and ask for a medical pregnancy test if your period doesn’t come soon & you think you might be pregnant.

If you are not sure your doctor is paying you 100% attention, go to another doctor (female doctors are always better for women’s health issues). I spent 6 years going to my doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with my periods before I changed doctors, the new doctor told me I had endometriosis, an underactive thyroid and I’ve been on treatment ever since.

Doctors tend to just want to ignore ‘period problems’ because they can’t do much except put you on the pill (which isn’t a very good treatment). You can research Hormonal Specialists as well. I currently see a Hormonal Specialist who has really fixed all of my problems with my periods.

I can’t emphasize how important it is to go and research this - female health doesn’t have any money in it (and not much research), so many doctors are unaware of possible solutions. Ask for a referral to a gynecologist (for the possible polysistic ovaries), and a referral to a hormone specialist (who will take blood tests etc).
