What size computer monitor is best for an office?

Either home or work really. Somebody suggested that he’s more focused when he uses just his laptop…but, I find myself appreciating a larger screen size, so I use an external monitor with my laptop at work.

Answer #1

Well I don’t know why a specific size is better than another, but I know most companies use 17inch screens. But I think this is generally a price consideration more than anything else.

Answer #2

Well I don’t really know if there is a specific one size fits all, I can say for my needs “I am not a gamer” I like multiple monitors, but all I really use the computer for is work or read. I have three 19 inch monitors on my current work station so that I can spread my work out easily across the screens.

Answer #3

i like 22” true widescreen monitors 1920x1080 16-9..

i would never go below that size and never to the above resolution of 1920x1200.

even when im playing a none eyefinity game its wicked just using the 1 middle monitor and i only use 1 monitor for internet and 1920x1080 is perfect for that, for me of course.

Answer #4

If the monitor will only used just for simple documentation and not for designing and graphics. I would suggest even 15 inches.

Answer #5

It all depends on what you are doing, I have a 55 inch monitor on one of my PCs but all I use it for is watching tv. The resolution on it is 1080p but it is only used as a TV, I would not want to try to work from this screen.

Answer #6

My laptop has a larger monitor than 15 inches, he said he likes the larger working area, plus for people like me who have been working with computers for years and are now going blind, I like the big font.

Answer #7

As far as I’m concerned the bigger the better. At work we all have 24” monitors on our workstations and many people have dual 24” monitors. I’m hoping we upgrade to 27” monitors next lease cycle.

Answer #8

Drat, I liked too many answers already! That’s bigger than the one I have…I think my external one is 21 or 22 inches.

Answer #9

I think it entirely depends on what you do work wise on it. If you have to pay attention to detail, work on websites, graphics, or if you game or anything like that really, having a bigger monitor offers you a lot more. It’s difficult to do any of those things if you can’t see much of what you’re doing. I’d recommend anything above 15”.

If you’re only using it for home, though, then 15” should be more than good enough. I use a 10.1” monitor right now. While I’ve grown used to it, it’s not as great as my big screen from my desktop. I find that I’m more focused with more room.

Answer #10

Per Matt that is the size he uses and he likes it, I would have to say anything to reduce eye strain is a great help.

Answer #11

I’d get a large one if you are sitting far away from it and a small one of your desk is rather small and you are right in front of it. Have you thought about using 2?

I love working with two monitors. All modern operating systems (Windows 7 as well as almost every modern Linux) can deal with two screens if you have a second graphics adapter. Its so cool, having one monitor to put your browser and read documentation or your e-mail program and the other monitor for whatever you are currently working at.

Whatever monitor you take, use one where resolution is appropriate for the size. A 15” screen diameter screen should have at least 1024768 pixels. A really large monitor (23”) should have at least 20481536. (These are the numbers for 3*4 size monitors, wide screens have different resolution)

Make sure that the brightness /brilliance values of your monitor are good. Especially if you have a desk with direct sunlight.

Answer #12

Grr, I already clicked three !#$@#$! very good answer. We don’t have direct sunlight in our home office, but that’s definitely an issue.

Answer #13

I have one 21” for “normal” work, and one 32” for movies, and some photoshop work. That works really fine for me :) I would never go smaller than 21” - In fact, I’m thinking about replacing that one with a 27” next month.
