Should I get a second opinion on my braces?

I’ve had braces on for almsost 3 years now. I had an overbite, and I was only suppoed to have them on for a year and a half. They are painful, ugly, and annoying. My teeth look PERFECT, seriously , they do. My orthodontist, however, wants to keep me in them for at least another 6 months to a year, and I have had it. Even my dentist says he’s being ridiculous. He has a reputation for keeping them on longer than needed. I want them off now!! Do you think I should force him to take them off and/or get a escond opinion?

Well, you can try a second opinion, I know I would. It’s like your orthodontist wants to save money on making retainers. I always thought braces were sexy, though. Yeah, they were painful but did you notice an increase in the amount of heads you turn? 8D I’d say 3 years is probably long enough. Six more months to a year? I think he’s being a little dramatic. Not to mention the fat paychecks he gets for keeping them on longer than needed. You can also try and force him to take them off but get the second opinion first. He may be overdoing it, but he may actually be right, too. See if your parents can hook you up with another orthodontist and get his/her opinion. If they say you’re good or they’ve been on too long as is, go march right down to your orthodontist and demand he take them out and give you your retainers. Then see if you can’t just schedule your follow ups with the other orthodontist. :) Good luck!

Treatment time differs from case to case. Even though your teeth look perfectly straight doesn’t mean they are ready to come off. They may just need some settling time before they come off so they don’t move back to their original positions.

In my opinion, as long as you didn’t have to have a whole heap of teeth taken out, then I think your orthodontist is alright. I’m saying this because I know that there are ways of making room for all the teeth if your teeth were crowded to begin with,
