Why do criminals sentenced to the death penalty get to choose their last meal?

  Letting people choose their last meal has been around since the Romans. but I've always thought of it being linked to Jesus and his final meal also I've heard, even though this was European, they offered them a choice of their last meal as a sign of 'peace' or oath of truce and accepting the last meal was believed to forgive the witness(es), executioner and whoever else is present.

  Well I guess when you've done something so bad that you're sentenced to death, food is the best you're gonna get.
