Is self injury becoming a huge problem?

Is it just me or is self injury becoming the new anorexia? And by this I am in no way belittling two very serious problems, but it seems like there are more people doing it today than when I was a kid, or maybe people are just more aware of it?

I agree with you breathing. I’ve been self injuring for years now and everytime you have a problem its hard to deal and cope with without resorting to self injury. it is a real issue and no its not a form of attention seeking at all. you try living with it and see how you can deal with things. when I was younger the last thing I wanted was for people to see my arms. why do you think people hide it??? duh real easy answer right there. if self injury was done to seek attention why would people try to hide it? they wouldn’t. if we were attention seekers it would be done on a visable part of our bodies so it couldn’t be hidden. I know for myself that I hide them because I feel ashamed. I used to do heroin and this is just as much as a real addiction as that was. in every sense of the word.

lol, you’ve obviously never cut… let me assure you, people finding out was the last thing I wanted as a teenager… cutting or other forms of self injury actually makes a person feel better because it releases endorphins… there is a biological reason that hurting yourself makes you feel good… it isnt about attention, although I can understand why people would think that…

as for “in the old times” who was this for in the old times? the rich people who could afford it? please, women have worked since forever, there may have been a couple of years where a few lucky people could afford for the woman to stay at home, but for the majority of the world, the woman was working at something or another, and kids turned out just fine… please do your research, the 50’s when women were staying home were for the people who could afford it, not for the majority of people, and definitely not for tjhe worldwide population… this was also a time where women were oppressed and not that happy…

It’s not you it’s the kids theyre getting smarter now instead of trying to hurt themselfs in like a million difrent ways they just go online and look up the anser. But its not all there fault what about the idiot parents who arnt picking up on these problems. When a child feels as though he or she needs to inflict pain upon themself in a desprate plea for attention it is not good.

Answer #4

ok, so maybe you cut for the attention, but that doesnt make all cutters attention seekers… I never wanted people to know, and I was good at it, no one ever did know…

Answer #5

Why is self injury just a teenage problem to you people?? Its not and apparently none of you are addicted to self injury. I’ve been dealing with self injury for 10 years. How dare you say that its and “attention seeking disorder” Its not, its a real problem and a real addiction.

Answer #6

oh please I’ve been in therapy since I was 6 cut for the first time at 8 more or less turned my wrists inside out when I was 12 I know what I’m talking about

Answer #7

Ohk hold up, self injury is not usually a plea for attention… Kids who self injure do not usually go around displaying their cuts, burns or whatever, and if they are caught they usually lie about them… They’re very good at hiding them, you cant blame the parents for that…

Also, the reason I compared it to anorexia was because 10-15 years ago it started to come into public awareness just like self injury is and the professionals didnt know how to treat it, just like they’re having issues with self injury now. I just think doctors need to be better trained to deal with it. Tossing someone in the psych ward because of cutting is completely pointless… hopefully it will finally get the attention it really needs

Dear angel14215 ,

I agree with you it is becoming an even biger problem. Kids are growing up in a world where both parents have to work two jobs each just to get by and they are feeling ignored and unloved and do not know how to deal with lives problems.

So they turn to hurtting them selves because they feel so alone or as though it is there faults their families are messed up and or mom and dad don’t have enough time for them. it is a serious issue and one that is only getting bigger.

It is not at this point what I would call a huge problem but it is growing into one and the simple fact that it is happening makes it a problem.

kids god bless them can be so stupid the the ones who lie about the cuts only do so because they think that adults should know that and do something about that they shouldnt have to ask no its not all the parents fault but take a step back and look at the world today this isnt like the old days where mom would stay home with the kids and shower them with attention now everyone has plans and timelines to go with them. There atention is so focused on them selfs that their completly ignoring there kids needs and just asuming their fine. The only reason for kids cutting is attention they may deny it but in the end it all boils down to one thing

yes eating disorders and self-harm are a big problem. it’s always been there, but now we hear about it more. wether it be on the net, on tv programes or on the news. I cut when I was in high school, but I never told anyone. I knew one other girl who cut in school, but her close friends only fond out by accidentally seeing her cuts. I think the net gives people a way of telling others about their problems in an almost annoynymous way. it’s a good thing in some cases, cause it helps to talk to similar people.
