Is she my second or third cousin?

I just met one of my relatives at a family reunion. She’s my dad’s cousins daughter. Does that make her my second or third cousin? (I get a little mixed up about these things:)

Answer #2

Your Dad’s cousin is your first cousin once removed his daughter is your second cousin when she has children they will be your fathers cousin twice removed and your second cousin once removed. I actually had a teacher in middle school way back in the dark ages make us learn this for a test. This explains some also http://www.genealogy.com/16_cousn.html Thid chart is good also. http://stellar-one.com/genealogy/cousins.htm Hey I actually know some of my 5th cousins in the Area around where I live.

Crack is very bad for you, unless you are having your plumbing worked on…

The really funny thing is, I could be wrong. I am also pretty sure that is how is goes, but I have nothing to back it up. Thanks for vote of confidence mamk–>your name makes me want to call you “mammy cakes”.

Answer #4

Ok, I’m confused. I thought that this would technically be “second cousin, once removed” because it’s a different generation.

:( I’ll brush up on my genealogy.

Answer #5

You can borrow my brush.

That cousin, the daughter of the FIRST cousin is “once removed” from the asker’s dad, making the cousin “twice removed” from the asker. You get third cousin.

Answer #6

Third. The daughter of your father’s cousin is his second cousin, which makes her your third cousin.

Answer #7

Errm… Monica, no.

Rnealw is correct.

Your dad’s cousins, children are your second cousins.

Think about it this way:

Your cousin is your parents (x1) siblings children (x1) Your second cousin is your parent’s parent’s (x2) sibling’s children’s children (x2) and so on.

The removed bit comes if the number of times you go up and the number of times you go down generations is different.
