Is it safe to take a laxative while on fentanyl patch?

I had tubal ligation on friday last week. I was put on fentanyl because of the extreme pain I’ve been going through. My surgeon told me to use stool softer but it hasn’t made me defecate. I haven’t passed a bowl movement in a few days. I haven’t been eating much though since my surgery, mainly soup and broth because it’s hard to push and I don’t want to cause myself problems. I’ve tried eating yogurt to help put friendly bacteria in me but I don’t want to go on days without passing a bm. I was told the fentanyl causes constipation. It’s a holiday so my gyno’s office is closed, I can’t get a hold of him to find out if it’s okay to take a laxative like magnesium citrate is what I was thinking of. Safe or no? Would a laxative be too straining on my insides from the surgery? I drank a bottle of magnesium citrate the day before my surgery as directed from my surgeon.

It should be ok and that’s normal, take half the suggested dose and let your doc know that your bowels aren’t moving
