An associate degree is typically the minimum requirement for becoming a registered nurse. Associate degrees can be obtained at junior/community colleges. Typically, however, a bachelor's degree is required for positions of more responsibility. Many colleges and universities around the country offer RN degrees. Graduate degrees are also available at many colleges and universities. In addition to education, nurses passing an approved curriculum must also pass a national licensing examination called the NCLEX-RN. This allows the nurse to be registered to practice in one state though some states have licensing agreements with other states.
