Recovering from psychosis - scared at night

Ok so I’ve recently been recovering from acute psycosis but I get terrified at night that someones going to kill me (I know it sounds weird but I cant help it!) I was just wondering if anyone knew any ways I could calm myself or stop being so scared? Thanksss xx

I suffer from night terrors quite often and I am almost always very shaken by them. The thing that helps the most though, is to try and take my mind off it. I usually play my Nintendo DS, read a book or play the PS2. It may seem silly to do this at night, but it helps to get rid of all the bad thoughts and replace them with happy or funny thoughts. I once ended up sitting up until half past 4 in the morning, before I could feel comfortable going to sleep. But it’s very important to do what’s necessary to make you comfortable. I hope this helps you. =o)

Answer #2

It might help if you had someone who could share your room with you

I used to be afraid at night, and I found that having the tv on helped to keep my mind preoccupied so the other thoughts would diminish

Perhaps a lock on your door so that you know nobody can get in?

OK, now a more clear picture is beginning to develop about you. In your other message, you said the doctor won’t renew your prescription for sleeping pills, and you have trouble sleeping. In this message, we begin to find out WHY you can’t sleep. Psychosis is not going to be cured by sleeping pills, or drugs, or alcohol, or anything other than psychological intervention. I’d suggest you need to tell your doctor WHY you can’t sleep, and let him get you referred to a competent, caring therapist. Sometimes a psychotherapist can help you see WHY you are having these psychotic episodes, and help you to overcome them. Or, you might benefit from a psychotropic medication. Don’t try to self-treat this condition. Talk to a counselor or therapist.

Some people like “white noise” (any noise to cover up the complete silence).

However psychosis is a problem that I think is best treated professionally if possible. Have you been treated in the past with a medication such as Haldol or perhaps Risperidone?

I ask only because psychosis tends to alter the state of ones reality. You can have visual and auditorial hallucinations, paranoia (which is what you described with the fear of someone coming to kill you). This is by no means anything you have control over and it does not sound odd to me at all (I work in the medicinal industry though - so. perhaps thats why).

Its a condition that overtime can actually consume your life and your identity. Feel free to email me if you’d like to talk further. :o)
