Puppy doesn't like concrete

I have a yorkie maltese puppy. She is 3 months old. Its hard to take her for walks because she won’t walk on the concrete. I have to pick her up at every driveway. What can I do? I already tried just sitting her in the middle of the driveway and walking on but she just sits there and cries.

Answer #1

How hot is it outside at the time? The pavement might be to hot for her paws. If she is just acting up. Get her in trouble every time she whimpers, don’t pick her up or else you’re not teaching her anything.

Answer #2

Try putting leaves or news paper over your driveway and have your puppy walk over it ontil it gets use to the driveway. And then slows take them away. Just a suggestion but it might work. I’m sure your puppy with grow out of it though.

we had the same problem with our chiwawa…their just not used to it yet, just take her out and let her sniff at it.. dont force her to walk on it cause that can cause a chronic fear of concrete.

house dogs can be finicky, tr leading her with a toy or her fav object over the concrete, good luck

Ditto dichihuahua and butterfliesforhope…I just want to add…coax her with treats ect, YES!! Coddle her and sympathize…NO! The symapthy actually reinforces her refusal to go forward…She’s a dog, and dogs follow leaders…If she were in a pack, the pack leader wouldn’t turn back and symapthize…BUT, with a puppy, they may turn back and wait…the pup know it’s got to follow. Since you’ve already sympathized, and picked her up and carried her, your “wait” will be longer…When you leave the house you gotta plan on taking the time for waiting her out…DO NOT give up…she will do it once she knows you aren’t going to help her out.

I know it hurts to see your “baby” scared, but oh what a relief once she’s over this…

Have you tried coaching her with some treats…get down to her level, not far from her…talk to her in a soft voice…coaching her with the treats, when she moves closer to u, give a treat & praise her with a happy tone in your voice…continue to do this until your both across the driveway…or maybe you can play with her in your driveway some so she can get used to the texture of the driveway…hope this helped, dichihuahua

Answer #7

Hey, matt…I like that idea…it would be a “start”.
