puppy is scared of cars

my 13 week puppy when I take her out on her walks, is scared or cars that drive past. she just sits and refuses to move or runs away.

how can I prevent this into turning into a problem later on!! I dont want her to have a fear of cars as its a problem when walking my other dogs.

My puppy used to do just the same thing, he refused to move or would wimper. I took one of his favourite toys (a little teddy smurf lol) and used it as a sort of distraction. I would praise him for being calm whilst walking down a road. I first took him past parked cars to get him used to them, saying ‘good boy’ each time he went past or gave him a treat to associate cars as being something not to fear. Then moved on to a quiet road which only had a few cars which would go by, praising him again for remaining calm. Eventually progressing until he could walk even when cars went by on to more busier roads. Hope its helped somewhat. Its just constant reminding to your puppy that everything will be fine. Also if she sees you are calm, she will sense there isnt anything to fear, as dogs can sense the emotions of their owners and feel the same. So dont worry that your puppy will run away or stop, just try to carry on as normal, and follow these steps. Let me know if I’ve helped x

use treats to give her when the cars go by, this will work and you have to be consistant with it until she is no longer paying any attention to the cars going by. It is all about postive reienforcement.

Your pup is experiencing things at a fast rate right now…and they go thru a number of “fear stages” until they reach about 1 year old…The best way to help them overcome fear, is to NOT sympathize (hard, I know for us humans…but sympathy is a re-enforcer for fear behaviors)…let YOUR confidence roll down the leash…let her sit, but say nothing…let her watch the car go by, then just pick up where you left off… walking. I’d keep her on a leash (or long line, tho)…until she gets past this.

I wouldnt worry too much about it, actually it might be a good thing! this way, she wont run to the road and accidentally get hit by a car! however, if youlive in a place where lots of cars pass, and you want your puppy to overcome this fear, the best thing to do is make her confront it every day. take her for walks by the road daily, on a leash, and when she tries to run away pull her back and force her to confront the fear. = ]

Answer #5

the best thing you can do is ignore this behavior… that’s how we train dogs.

we praise the behavior we want them to have and we ignore the behaviors we don’t want them to have.

if you coddle her she will like the attention, and continue to act afraid of cars even if she isn’t afraid anymore.

Just wait for her to get over it on her own and continue on your walks like nothing happened.

Good advice people. My puppy is 10 weeks old and has similar issues with cars. I have found that letting her sit and watch the car go by is helping as she is not trying to run away anymore.
