the whole saying is meaning that you are swearing to keep something, like a promise prehaps. like lets suppose susie told anne a really big secret and the only way susie would tell anne is if anne said i cross my heart and hope to die. its just saying that you’ll keep a promise.

because if your crossing ur heart ur making a promise on the thing that makes you live…if u break the promise u shuld be dead, basically
