Does plastic in the microwave cause cancer?

Does plastic in the microwave cause cancer ? I just put a plastic cup in the microwave to melt the butter that was in it. I did this to spread more butter on my popcorn. I need to know if this is a health hazard ? my home ec, science and health teachers all said you shouldn’t put plastic in the microwave because it can release cancer causing toxins..Is this true ?

It does NOT, stop adding fuel to the fire when you clearly don’t know (each of you get a good punch in the nose that says it does). For proof follow the link and others STFU about this already and let the truth stand and not spread around a myth that has been BUSTED:

You all that drink from those plastic bottles with spring water are consuming more than only the water, and again it just passes right through you without any harm.

These people say that putting plastic in the microwave causes cancer for sure do not know what they are talking about. There is no evidence that microwaving plastic gives you cancer but it probably isn’t very healthy.

Dear itsangie,

There has been no person diagnosed with cancer specifically from this but plastics that are not recommended for the microwave do emit chemicals that could essentially cause cancer.

Even plastic wrap should not touch the food while microwaving. Use only containers for the microwave to be safe.

But to date there hasn’t been anyone with specific cancer from this…I do believe that you would have to do a lot of microwaving with unsafe plastic for many, many years.

So don’t worry if you’ve done it a few times, you’ll be fine. Just be more careful in the future.

Sue…good luck

THIS IS DUMB!! There is no conclusive evidence that supports this “theory” that microwaving plastic causes cancer. Just because your Dad told you this was true doesn’t mean it’s true. I’m sorry, but your Dad doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Do your own research and see for yourself that accredited universities and medical facilities have done studies with no conclusive evidence to support this theory. It’s a myth.

However, it’s not recommended to microwave your food in containers not meant to be microwaved. Sure, if it isn’t meant for the microwave it could melt and start cooking like your food. That isn’t good. It could cause the plastic to melt into your food and you never know where that plastic came from. Probably some plastics factory with unsanitary machines. Look to make sure the container states it’s okay to be microwaved. If it doesn’t have a label, don’t use it.

For me, personally, I don’t like plastic containers and would rather use glass for microwaving or otherwise. In fact, I don’t even like the microwaves as a whole. They’re great for preparing meals, but I’ve always been skeptical too. Always have been. Same goes for teflon. Just don’t like the stuff. It freaks me out.
