How exactly do phone operators work?

do you just say the persons name you want to talk to but dont know the number of and the operator will connect you to them? does it cost money to do that? how do you get connected to the operator, do they have a number? is it 411? i dont know what 411 is, thats why im asking, i just know 411 is important.

They ask to many dumb questions and never give you what you want

From most land lines the number is 0. Most cell providers the number is 411. As far as how they work they will ask you the city and state, then the name and possibly address to narrow down multiple results. The annoying thing is alot of them are automated. as far as cost it depends on the provider it could cost anywhere from free to $2 per lookup. if your at home just use whitepages.com it’s free but if your on the go then you can use 411 just be aware there might be some costs associated with it.
