Could someone be able to lie without thinking or meaning to or do you believe that when someone tells a lie that there's always a reason behind it even if it wasnt a necessary lie? Like, could some people just have that kind of personality where they tell lies when they know they dont need to and that what they try to cover up isn't even a problem? And what would you do with a person like that? If everything else was pretty much fine except a useless lie now and then? And what could cause that kind of personality do you think?
We need a psychology category. ;)
There's always a reason behind everything someone does. Even compulsive liars have reasons behind their lies. They may or may not be aware of the reason, but there is always a reason. Usually compulsive liars have issues with self esteem and their lies make them feel better in some way. You cannot lie without meaning to exactly, but it may be something not entirely conscious. I'll give you an example, it's like compulsive hand washing. When I get anxious, I was my hands a lot. I dont even notice I'm doing it sometimes. I'll just notice my hands are really dry one day, and then it's like oh, Ive been washing too much. It's the same thing. The only way to overcome something that is compulsive is to stop doing it. To pay close attention and to stop. This seems obvious. But here's the thing. When you stop doing something that is compulsive, it creates a LOT of anxiety. Because the compulsive habit was serving a purpose. If the person can figure out a way to deal with this increase in anxiety and wait it out, the anxiety eventually goes down and the person does not need to engage in the habit anymore. But the person has to be aware something is wrong and be willing to tolerate the anxiety and change (e.g. I have to wash my hair every day. I know it's a compulsion but my hair is fine, and it doesn't hurt anyone, so why change anything). Oh and compulsive lying is not necessarily a part of a person's personality. It could be, it is sometimes seen in certain personality disordered people and that's just how they are. But that is less of a compulsive lying problem and more of a general personality problem.
yeah defenelty, it's not so much their personality as it may be their mental state of mind. Sometimes it might be that they just don't know what their talking about and so they make up stuff so they don't look so clueless. Believe it or no it doesn't mean that they are intentionally lieying but they are just trying to make sence of the question.
I think this is a symptom of autism. Not sure, but my best friend has autism (azburgers or however you spell it), and she's a great person and nice but she lies a lot without necessarily meaning to, making her seem kind of two-faced.
Can they change without therapy? If they could realize they're a compulsive liar could they fix it or would that just make them a different person since lying is like second nature them?
Certainly ... compulsive lying is an actual mental illness. Most of the time, they lie and don't realize they're doing it because it just feels natural to them.
Compusive lying disorder? Yeah, I have that. I lie about the stupidest and most small things without knowing why or thinking. It's so weird.
And what would you do with a person like that? Would it be hard to have a mostly honest relationship with them?
I think, if they can accept that they have the problem, they may be able to work at stopping it.
It would be hard ... this is something that usually requires therapy to deal with.
I dont know about that, that seems...wrong.
That's not a symptom of asperger's
That's relieving...sort of.
Compulsive liar?
