Why do people look down on those who need to see government assisstance?

I had to use medicare during my pregnancy, my son is on medicaid and was on wic as a baby, and im currently seeking unemployment after getting laid off. It just frustrates me that ive worked hard since i was 15 and paid taxes yet people feel the need to look down on me when i need to ask for help.

Answer #1

Because they feel that people who receive assistance are just like plants they sit and don’t do work but they reap the benefits

Answer #2

I think u meant seek government assistance

Answer #3

There are a slew of bad people who cheat the system, and thus it sends a bad rep out for anyone on government aid. Even if you have legitimate reasons for needing the assistance, people are either going to think you’re living of “their” money, or that you are wasting your life away living off the government. Is this always the case? OF course not. Sadly, stereotypes reign supreme in this country

Answer #4

They think that people are lazy and some might be, and some might have got laid off temporarily and some people might be disabled but people feel that people must be lazy for being on assitance, they feel like its the persons fault. I try not to look down on people in general, and not feel like this. I actually heard these feelings toward toward those people expressed in my economics class.

Answer #5

Answer #7

Answer #8

Answer #9

Sometimes people need a little help - there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s the people who don’t need the help and take it anyway that make things difficult for everyone else. Don’t let others decide how you should feel about yourself - you know you’re a hard-working person who’s just a little down on her luck, and you have every right to be proud of all your accomplishments.

Answer #10

I don’t think people begrudge those who need a helping hand up…as long as they don’t make it a lifestyle. I’ve met both types on assistance. Those who took the help up, got on their feet, and never turned back…and then the ones who are perfectly capable of working a job, and fending for themselves…but choose to make welfare a way of life. Most I’ve met are in the second catagory.

You earned your unemployment, that’s not “assistance”…and, if I remember right, you have to look for a job while receiving it…Hope you find another job.
