What should people know when looking for health insurance?

I’ve been asking my family for help with this for a long time and they don’t seem to care, so seeking other sources. I’m a 25 year old college student with minor pre-existing conditions that basically make any health insurance impossible to get o afford. The college makes you have their insurance if you don’t have anything else, but that costs $415 per semester which is kind of ridiculous. I’m looking for something a lot less expensive so I can drop the student insurance and save that money to use later in school when student loans run out, but yeah, I really have no clue what I’m looking for. Any suggestions?

Under the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) college students under 26 can still be covered on their parents’ insurance. If you have siblings your dad should be able to add you for no additional cost. If your parents don’t have health care it is going to be hard to do better than your college health insurance. Assuming a 15 week semester $415 works out to $120/month which is rather cheap. For perspective it costs $800/month for me to insure my family of which I pay $500/month and my employer contributes $300. Even this doesn’t cover everything; with 2 surgeries and 2 emergency room visits this year my out-of-pocket was over $12,000. Health care costs have been increasing much faster than inflation for a long time.

Knew I was going to get that. I’m going to be 26 in a few months, my mom doesn’t have health insurance, and my dad can’t afford to put me on his…and they won’t take me anyways because of the pre-existing conditions. I haven’t been on my parents’ plan since I was 16.

Wow, good answer! I notice the relation between inflation and healthcare costs. I think it’s because as everything becomes more expensive due to the dilution of our fiat currency, the overpaid specialists and pharmaceutical suppliers think they need more money. The chief executive officers and more advanced doctors and surgeons want to keep playing golf and insuring their many vehicles and houses, but at the same time we all use the same fiat money. Thus, as it becomes worth less, they need more of it.
