How many people are/were a full time student while having a job?

What was the job and how were you able to handle the work load?

Answer #1

I was a full time student in hairdressing and was also working part time as a hairdresser’s apprentice, and I did work with a disabled girl as well. I also had to help at home (dinner, housework…), help my sister with her homework and work in the academy’s salon. IT WAS SUCH HARD WORK! I was tired and sick all the time. I wouldn’t ever do it again.

I did that in my first year of uni which for me was a huge mistake. The course I was doing was basically a pre-med year and it was very intensive. I had about thirty hours a week actual contact time and was expected to put in the same amount or more again in addition to those hours for study and assignments. On top of that, I was working for about twenty hours a week, which included both weekend days. Add that to the fact that I was depressed and homesick… yeah I didnt do very well that year!

I did that my first year of university. Big mistake imo. At least for myself, it was too much. I think my main problem was that I was basically wasting entire weekends on my job. I had to drive back to my hometown for it (an hour and a half) and basically work 8 hour shifts Saturday and Sunday and then drive back. I got basically straight C’s and I think that was part of the reason. So this year, I’m taking it without a job, which is worrisome, and I’ll see how I do, maybe pick up a small one next year once I sort out some work strategies etc…

I was a full time student as I worked as a chef for a ballroom…the workload, itself, wasn’t too bad, but consider that I already had children at that time made things much harder. I think, as long as you work only a few times a week, it shouldn’t become too much.

I did it for a year of college. Work at a customer service call center - very emotionally draining, plus did 16 credits. I tried working 35+ hrs a week, but after about 3 months of it, there was just nothing left in me and I had to cut my hours back to around 25 a week.

I know some people even during high school that kept down a full time job (35 to 40hrs a week) and still did fine it school, but I just don’t seem to be capable of it.

During my freshman year of college, I worked part-time in a deli. At first it went really well, so well I attempted to work more hours than I should have. I began to get sick a lot and have a hard time juggling everything. In the end, I was asked to quit or I would be fired. It was humiliating to tell my parents, especially because I brought it on myself. If you’re considering getting a job while going to school full-time, it is obviously doable, however know your boundaries. Don’t push yourself in such a way that it will cause you to lose your job, effect your health or diminish your grades. You have to be very real with yourself.

Answer #9

I was a full time student and worked 55 hours a week at a day care my first year of college. To me, it was a little too much. I dropped one class because it was too demanding for my schedule. And I was even taking online classes. I’m not too good at multi-tasking, though. But my advice is don’t take on too much because you will get overwhelmed. It might sound like a good idea so you can graduate earlier, but it’s better to graduate later and do well in the classes, than take on too much and fail, wasting time, money and credits. :)

haha i was until the store i worked at closed, but i am a full time student in my 3rd year. and believe it or not i liked having a job and school. i had a job and all worked like 30+hrs a week for my 1st 2 yrs of college. then yeah like i said the store closed and now im out of a job but i liked having one and going to school. it made it easier to balance things, may sound weird but there was something to do all the time and i didnt get to focused on one class which is a good thing. haha and i still managed to make dean’s lists every semester.
