I went through an obsessive phase, but it is easy to mistake a phase for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. If you really do believe you have it, you do have to consult a doctor first (for assessment) and from there you can be referred to an appropriate psychologist (or other such professional). A lot of young people think they have this condition, but actually don’t. You’ve taken the initiative to do some research and so I would suggest you seek advice from a professional.

Things like stepping on cracks in the footpath or locking/ unlocking doors and feeling an increased desire to maintain equilibrium are perfectly normal when we are young. We can often become overly fixated on certain things (particularly during periods of boredom) and so it becomes easy to misjudge ourselves in relation to obsessive behaviour. Give yourself some time to properly assess your behaviour and if you are convinced that you have this disorder, consult a doctor and get a referral from there. Hope that helps :)!

Yeah, you need to see someone with training in psychology… so a counselor, a psychologist or sometimes a psychiatrist (sometimes if it is really bad you see them so they can prescribe medication). If it is bothering your or interfering with your life (really those are the pre-requistes for any disorder being called a disorder), then you may want to talk to someone about it. I have OCD, I wash my hands compulsively (to the point where they crack and bleed), and wash everything too much, so it takes up way too much time… Basically the only way to stop is just stop the compulsions (easier said than done, believe me I know). You should def consider a therapist to help you with this…

I also have OCD.

The trick is learning to control it instead of letting it control you - which is actually easier than it sounds, since with OCD you feel the need to control anyway.

Keep in mind that most of the things we do are not harmful, so why not just let them be? Nobody is going to get angry with you just because you have to start walking with your right foot everytime, or because you must chew your food exactly 12 times before swallowing.

Some things can get in the way of ordinary life, though, so if that’s the case, you may need to seek help to deal with those issues.

I have it. I used to have it bad. I used to count every step I took, and if I stepped on a crack with one foot then I’d have to with the other no matter how many times!!! so I avoided the cracks (extremely hard). same thing with hitting, my little cousin hit one arm once (only a baby) and it was killing me cause she wouldn’t hit the other arm. it’s not that bad anymore. the worst is probably touching everything on the shelves at walmart. but I do colour coordinate everything.
