Border collie puppy not eating

I recently brought home my second border collie puppy. I already have a 4yo male. Dolby as we have named her, is not eating properly. She is fully vaccinated. She is 11 weeks old and has lost a fair bit of weight. She is also fully wormed and flea treated. I don’t understand what I am doing wrong. I have taken her to my local vet and paid approx. $200 for them to tell me she is just settling in. But she has hardly eaten a thing in over 3 weeks. I am very concerned as I have come very attached to her and want to see her happy and healthy. I am desperate for a solution to my puppy problem. Thank you. Mrs_whiteman

Yup phrannie’s on the money. Coccidia will often also have blood in the poop, but not always. It can also cause the opposite of diarrhea, I’ve seen dogs at my shelter with it who are just constipated and uninterested in food.

When I got my puppy, she wouldnt touch dog food, strange as it is. For the next six years my mum fed her chicken, liver, kidneys, all that stuff, until she got fed up of cooking it everyday, so she decided to try her again with dry dog food, it worked wonders.

Call the place where you got your puppy and see what they have been feeding your pup. Your pup will reject new food at first if you don’t slowly introduce them, so you have to find out what Dolby’s old diet is.

Did you keep your puppy on the food the Breeder had her on? My pups when they go to new homes, the new families know what food the pups has been on. I also always send about 1lb of the food I am using with the pup.

Many of the new families discuss with me changing to a different food and I make sure the plan on doing it gradually. There are cases that the pup does not like the new food and the owner goes back on the food I started the puppy on.

Have you tired mixing a little can dog food with the dry or visa versa?

You do not mention the pup having problems with her stools and I would assume if you have seen a Vet and spent $200.00 you are keeping the shots up to date. She should have one more booster and a rabies due.

She may need worming though?

Based on where I work your dog is not fully vaccinated. We do 4 sets of shots called Booster vaccines. they get them 3 weeks apart starting at 8 weeks old and they do not have a full imunnitity against a lot of things until these vaccines are done. Is she on Heart worm prevetion. HWP. It could be just as simple as switching foods to quick. when you switch you should mix them gradually until all new food. you can try boiling rice and burger for her and keep her on a bland diet to see if her tummy was just upset. But there are a lot of things it could be so watch for signs and if anything gets worse. maybe get a second opinion

Answer #6

Have you been watching her poop? Is there any mucous in it? Does she have loose stools? Anything to suggest that something is going on with her digestive track? When I got my dog, he had Coccydia…something I’d never heard of…but something they have to check for specifically in a stool sample. Coccydia affects appetite, and makes them seem un thrifty…thin and their coats get dull…It’s usually a “kennel thing”…and tho adult dogs have an immune system big enough to handle it, puppies do not.

It’s worth it, to call the Vet and tell them you’re coming in with a stool sample…and you want it checked for Coccydia and while they are at it, check for Giardia, too.
