New puppy

I got a present of a puppy for christmas. He’s a jack russell and he’s now 3 months old. My boyfriend has a 6 year old son who treats the dog like a toy. I’m afraid that the dog will turn on him. Any advice on what to do?

Answer #1

just let your son play with him and when the dog dis agrees with him take the dog tell him its ok or if hes getting mean with him then tell the dog no and put him down again and eventually the dog will start playing with your son

Answer #2

Phrannie has really good advice. the boy should learn how to be nice to an animal and JRT’s have low patience.

Answer #3

Demonstrate the proper way to treat a puppy - as a puppy he doesn’t understand ‘rough play’…Take care !!

Answer #4

Well…time to teach the kid HOW to treat a dog…or the dog will be off limits. Show the child how to throw the ball, and play nice with the pup…even show him how to walk him, let him help with basis obedience (good for child and dog)…it will also instill into the dog, that the child is alpha. Having a pet as a child doesn’t come natural for all kids…they have to learn by example…Pets bring “empathy” into a child’s experience…the old “how would YOU feel, if I did this to YOU??”

JRT’s aren’t dogs who take too much crap…so you’re right in wanting to nip this in the bud at an early age.
