My cat's head injury

my cat came in about two days ago with a puncture wound on his head. its right on the his forehead and its about 1cm deep and 1cm wide. (possibly ripped on barbed wire or something cant think how he could have done it) anyway it smell and is pussing, I think its become infected. its also swollen on one side. we have been bathing it with saltwater and making sure its clean but its stil oozing puss! My mums away so I cant get him to the vets for a week, does anyone have any ideas as to what to put on it to clear it up! thanks I cant stand seeing him in pain!

Cats are famous for abcesses…he might have gotten it in a territorial fight…ANY puncture would can abcess, as they tend to heal from the outside in, with the “inside” doing nothing but festering.

You need to take him to Vet, for antibiotics to fight infection…In the meantime, keep the outside of it washed and open, so it can stay clean and is able to drain… this allows the deep part of the wound a chance to heal…

If it seals, you’re going see A LOT of swelling, and they are incredibly painful (think an abcessed tooth on his head)…he will run a fever, and he won’t feel good. I’ve even seen them loose all the hair around wound (I think that’s from the heat of the fever at the wound site)

An ampicillian shot, and a little oral antibiotic, and he’ll be fine in two days…do go to the vet on Monday.

id call a friend and have them take him to the vet with you and if thats not possible I suggest what ally xo said, just put peroxide on it, that may help

Answer #4

Thanks for updating us on how he’s doing…I always wonder when I hear about hurt or sick animals on here…and we rarely get to hear the good news… :)

Thanks for all your advice it did help! he’s actually pretty much recovered now and I didn’t have to take him to the vet which was such a bonus! Its now healed from the inside out so is starting to close up and is no longer infected or pussing, he’s acting himself again so im happy :) thanks for you all your advice!

Answer #6

can you call a local vet to see if they could give you something for infection just incase? Keep dabbing the area with a clean cloth to keep the area clean of puss and drainage. We had a cat that was used to going outside then one day he came in with a big gash across his back, it looked like someone tried to stab him, we ended up taking him to the vet becasue of the same reason, they put a tube in for drainage and sewed up the wound and gave us medication, he lived to be 16 years old!

a) keep the area clean b)peroxide on the wood c) saltwater might irritate the wound-use a clean cloth instead
