Should I bleach my hair to go from brown to blonde?

ok I have short medium brown hair. I’ve been wanting to go golden blonde for a long time. I had bought some store hair dyes but every time I do it, it doesnt lighten very well and my whole head doesnt turn out the same color (my longer hair is still very brown while other sections are much lighter) does anyone have any suggestions?? should I bleach it? I dont want to go to a salon if I dont have to. a ll I want is a nice golden blonde =[

Hi,

I think bleaching it would likely help the blonde look lighter. However, if it’s happening unevenly, it may still look uneven after you’ve bleached. I would go to a salon and see if they can strip it all or at least even it out.

For going Golden blonde from a medium Brunette color you’ll have to get the Bleach Blonde kit. (I personally use Herbal Essences) There is an instruction paper inside that will tell you to first cut off a small lock of hair close to the scalp (of course you can cut the lock from somewhere that’s not noticable) and put tape on the end of it (easier for handeling) then it will tell you a certain amount of each ingrediant from the bleach kit to make a small amount of bleach to apply to the lock. Leave it in for thirty minutes. it will probably turn a little orangish at some point just depending on the tones in your hair. If after thirty minutes the color on the lock of hair isn’t what you were looking for check back every five minutes until the color is what you desire. If you can’t get the color you desire before it goes platinum blonde it would be best to go to a professional and get the bleaching treatment done. it’s expensive but afterwards you can maintain your color on your own. (Good luck ^_^)

First time to lighten your hair from brown to blonde go to the salon, a well known and recommended salon/stylist. My first time to go from brown to blonde I did research which salon/stylist I wanted (local magazines and online for my local area) and I asked for recommendations from those I knew.

If you like the results pay attention to how the stylist lightens it and ask what color is used. You can ask this without offending by saying next time you want to be sure to have the same color, etc plus in case any of your friends who may want the same color.

Then you can keep up the maintenance on the roots through the store bought products. If the stylist uses a particular brand of color that is not offered in the drugstore don’t fret. Most of the popular hair color sites have equivalent information or you can email the drugstore hair color brand and ask for which of their colors best match the one the stylist used.

If you don’t like the end product then you still have your blonde color that you can go lighter or darker, ashier or more gold to find the color you want. Just be sure to condition your hair well.

I did this for years (I couldn’t afford the salon root touch ups). I now go to the salon for color maintenance as I can now afford it and trust my stylist. I love the results. I also find that as good as I tried to be as a self-colorist I never could get the back of my hair consistently colored as someone else could.
