How long did it take to fix everything from the indian ocean tsunami?

Answer #1

From an economic and humanitarian standpoint, it will take years to get back to pre-quake conditions. Tourism has been decimated, and shipping and fishing have been completely disrupted thanks to the shifting of coastlines and transport lanes. Environmentally, it may take decades for the region to recover. Mangrove forests and coral reefs, two ecosystems integral for life in the region, were hard hit, and groundwater supplies were contaminated, perhaps irreparably, which has all but wiped out farming and agriculture on some islands.

Your question assumes that everything has already returned to normal, but nothing could be further from the truth.

I’m living in Maldives, one of the countries in the Indian Ocean greatly affected by the tsunami of 2004. There are countless issues that won’t ever be fixed here, as a result of the tsunami.

The government spent $40,000 USD on a phallic monument to what happened…but, many people are still without homes that had one, pre-tsunami.

If it weren’t for the UN and international agencies stepping up, things would have been even worse.

Then there is the coral devastation…which will take centuries to recover.
