How long should you be depressed before thinking pills, like Zoloft that the doctor prescribed, are the answer?

Answer #1

sometimes medication is the answer, depending on the reason for the depression, the severity and if its temporary or chronic. but first you should try doing things that make you happy and talking to a professional, be it therapist or clergy and see if you can rise above it on your own

Answer #2

i say to try all other options before considering medication; exercise, therapy, expressive hobbies, etc. exercise is number one because it is the natural magic to make you happy weather you want to believe it or not and it has to be done on a regular basis, not only when you are sad. if you seriously went on a hour jog at least five days a week for a month and you still do not feel better then check in for more information about medication

Answer #3

I have been out of the norm for only about 2 weeks, I just don’t think that’s long enough to think that pills are the answer. Thx

Answer #4

its not. temporary depression is a normal phase we all go thru for a variety of reasons. i’m dealing with it now from the death of my son. but i know that it will eventually get better. time heals most all heartaches. i fight the depression with Fun Advice and playing Bingo. so just start doing things that takes your mind off whats bothering you

Answer #5

I’m so sorry for your lose. And thx again, I kinda have drawn away from FA since all this started

Answer #6

Exercise helps, while I’m exerciseing, then its back to the way I was. I exercise 7 days a week for an hour and a half each day

Answer #7

thank you sweetie. you should stay on FA. many of the questions keep your mind occupied elsewhere and if nothing else, many of the questions and answers make you laugh. laughter heals the soul you know

Answer #8

Welcome and before 2 weeks ago I was a daily all day and night user for more than 2 yrs. I will try comeing back and see what happens

Answer #9

thats good to hear. here’s a tip for fighting the depression. follow Nap, Onemandog and colleen. they’re thought-provoking and funny. and Ambushman is highly entertaining as well

Answer #10

Following them already and yes they are all good people

Answer #11

As antidepressants are usually trying to fix a chemical imbalance in your brain I would consider them a very last resort. Personally they scare the crap out of me. As for dealing with depression everyone has their own ways. I usually use books, music and video games on overcome especially depressing parts of my life (like my mom passing away 2 years ago). I more or less try to escape reality with fantasy works of some short :P. Also keeping myself busy and w/o time to think helps me. Work on projects or hobbies that I enjoy.

Answer #12

Anything a matter lately? Anything out of the norm… Try to get to the issue 1st. If you want to talk Funmail me… Maybe you need a new hobby or perhaps a part time job. Do something different.. Go out. Have fun. Meet people. You said its been the last two weeks. Perhaps you are bored with your life… Need something new and exciting to do

Answer #13

As soon as possible.

Answer #14

well here is some info: Clinical trials have shown low levels of VItamin B12, B6 and “folate” have been associated with depression, one study on middle aged women who had been diagnosed with depression showed that addition of B12 would by far improve the depressed state of the women, and they soon (within 7 days) were able to leave the clinic, while the women who were not given the supplements showed no signs of improvement….

i would go with a chemical imbalance induced depression in this case, seeing as exercise releases a lot of chemicals, thus eliminating the depressed state…..the problem with Zoloft and other Serotonin reuptake inhibitors is the fact they just push the problem away rather than fix it, and 60% of all patients report withdrawal symptoms worse than before they started taking the drug…. IMHO i’d smoke some weed, rather than take that stuff…

Answer #15

Well if your seeing a docyor already and he prescribed then, then obv he thinks you should be taking them now.

Answer #16

Medication has saved my life. Without it, I wouldn’t be here. It’s a long process to find the right med but it’s worth it. The worst part of it was the side effects but again, it’s worth it!

Answer #17

It doesn’t Matter how long you depressed its how much the depression bothers you and gets in the way. Depression is different for everyone so if you and your doctor think that your ready it really doesnt matter how long.
