Local traffic only

Anyone ever noticed road signs that say “local traffic only”, what is this referring to?

Thanks, I guess it is more of a psychological thing like ichi said, I never went down those roads when I saw the signs…

They don’t always know who is going in and out, but posting the sign does actually help to keep traffic at a minimum. Most people won’t use a barricaded street just to drive through.

Yes I have seen them and I agree with breezey I think it is just for the homeowners in the surrounding area and local traffic like the mail man, ups, school busses, and things like that,

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how on earth do they enforce that? they cant know who lives where? or whether someone is visiting a friend?
