Do you think i should keep letting me cat stay outside?

Well my cat use to stay in my house but that was when he was a kitty, no my mom threw out his litter box and she lets him outside, he only comes in my house when i get home from school and we let him out in the morning.I thought it was nice to let him(cat) get some fresh air outside everyday and plus he doesnt run away!!! he already knows my house very well. But this past Monday there was a little black kitten dead by our neighborhood street and it was runned over. The sad thing is that im worried about my cat’s safety. Do you think i should let the cat back in my house?? helpp.

Answer #1

I think it is cool, I grew up on a ranch, and we would keep cats in the barn to keep rodents out of the grain. I feel as long as they can find shelter, they will be fine.

Answer #2

I think cats are happier if the can go outside, but sadly not near as safe. Outdoors cats run a lot of risks. Unfortunately, now that he’s been outside, he probably won’t be a happy kitty being shut inside again. We have a stray we took in and she is forever meowing and scratching at the door. : (

Answer #3

It depends on your neighborhood and how dangerous. Is there a risk of getting run over? Heavy traffic? How are his vaccinations? Is the cat neutered or spayed? How would you feel about the cat getting Feline aids? If the cat gets in a fight with Feral cats and get bitten there is a risk of the cat getting aids and there is no cure.

Answer #4

In the city, I would say it is not safe, cats like to roam and due to the traffic in the city, there are a lot of animal casualties.

Answer #5

feline aids?? lol ive never heard that before

Answer #6

LOL! aww i know a friend whos cat spends all day crying to get out!! but hey its for their own good

Answer #7

oh and yes i know. sometimes i force him to stay inside even though he doesnt want too. I probably should but ill have to buy lots of toys he can entertain himself with during the day. aww poor cat of mine but i dont want to see him dead one day outside because that will be so heartbreaking for me :(

Answer #8

Its a difficult situation. We are lucky moving to he country in a week, so she’ll be able to go out as it will be safer for her (Once she gets fixed!). In the city there are just too many dangers. We have a barn at our new place so she’ll be able to keep the mice down for us. : )

It you really want him to be an indoor cat again, just stick with it and ignore the crying (I know, easier said than done). You could try letting him out on harness and leash or making him a cat run.

Answer #9

It is like human Aids. Only cats get it and can’t be pass into humans. http://funadvice.com/r/beldnagkvps

Answer #10

lol yes && thanks for your advice!!

Answer #11

omg thats so scary. can the cat still get it if its been neutered?

Answer #12

Cats like options, a cat flap is always the best it allows your cat to come and go as it pleases.

Answer #13

While cats like to roam, indoor cats are healthier and have longer life spans than outdoor cats. Outdoor cats can be run over, they can be badly hurt in fights with other cats, they could get hurt by other animals (stray dogs, snakes, etc), they could catch diseases such as feline leukemia and feline aids (yes it can be transmitted through non-sexual contact so no neutering is not helpful). If you just ignore the crying, he’ll figure out there’s no point. However, if you feel bad just one time and let him out just one time because of the crying you will completely undo everything and you’ll have to start from scratch. You have to be consistent. And yes, I have been there, my cat used to cry at my door every night (you think ignoring them during the day is hard, you should try it while you’re trying to sleep). Animals can be trained, it’s usually the owners who are difficult to train.

Answer #14

My cat lived to 21yrs she loved her garden and her home, but a cat should always be neutered otherwise the males roam far and fight and the females will always be pregnant, then their lives will be short.
