Jumping lab

I have a 7 month old lab that likes to jump on me and I have tried turning my back on him and saying no, but it only helps a little. then he bites on me from excitement. I do correct him but how long does it take for him to get the idea that this is not tolerable. I get so mad cause he hurts me that I end up smacking him and I really dont want to do that.

You’re doing almost everything right…just a couple of things to add…Don’t say “no”…don’t say anything…total silence…ALSO, do not make ANY eye contact, avert your head, your eyes, whatever works best for you…and treat him as a non-enity…a ghost. If you want to say something…say OWWW if he mouths you…I mean LOUD…it will startle him, at first…but gives you time to put him in a sit…then big BIG praise. He’ll probably only stay there a second so you got to praise fast…

He’s very young, and Labs are VERY exhuberent…tho they grow up into very reliable, and responsible partners…they do take a long time to mature…up to 24 months.

Every dog has it’s “thing”…it can be jumping…mouthing…chewing…the “thing” that seems it will never go away…BUT, it always does…There comes a day when you think…”WOW, I can’t remember when he jumped up on me the last time”…the deal is, these “things” always go away so gradually, that they seem to slip out of our conciouness…like out of sight out of mind…

Try kneeing him in the chest when he jumps. You do not have to do it hard, just lift you knee and when he comes down he will get a small jolt in his chest. This worked with both our dogs.
