ionic compounds?

explain why a solid ionic compound does not conduct electricity, but the compound will do so when melted or dissolved in water.

Answer #1

Because the electrons in the compound can move freely when in water. Whereas there is no space for them to move from compound to compound in its solid form.

Answer #2

Ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water, because the dissociated ions can carry charge through the solution

(when it’s in solid form, the compounds are locked together, once they are dissolved the particles are free positively and negatively charged ions, so salt in water will become NA+ and CL-)
