How to start a band if I have no musical talent?

First off find out if people think you can sing, and if you can’t buy a cheap instrument, take lessons and practice. Find a type of music that fits you and your style and find other people interested in playing that style. Practice, practice, practice and then start playing shows…play anyplace and everyplace you can and where your band fits. If your a hardcore punk band, don’t expect people to like you at show with a bunch of dashboard confessional style bands, and vice versa.

Learn to network with promoters, other bands and musicians and have them “HELP” your band find shows. Promote your show, give people you meet a burned cd of your music for free, and let them tell other people about you. The best person to promote your band is you. If you get booked on a show in a bar with 5 other bands, and 15 people show up and maybe 5 actually paid to get in because the other 10 were let in because they are friends with the band, your not getting paid, that bar is not going to let that promoter book there again, and because you couldnt get any one out there to see you that promoter wont use you again

The last thing don’t expect to be paid for every show you play. Earn it, play opening spots and closing spots. Build a following, get people talking and then you can say hey I drew 50 people out of the 75 that were there. I think I deserve a better spot on the shows. I think I deserve some of the take at the door.
