How to install bathroom sink drain?

  All the advice I've found assumes the sink drain will be exactly where it was in the old setup. That is very often not the case! My sink drain is 45 years old and the fittings don't seem to be the same as all the illustrations show. Anyone can give simplistic advice, but good and thorough advice is scarce!
