I got my first job 3 years ago and I still work there while I go to school. Some tips:

  1. Be on time and prepared. Managers notice when you’re a few minutes late, and if other people working can’t leave until you come in they’ll be angry at you. Also, they seem to always notice when you forget that nametag. I set all of my work stuff in the same spot so that when I’m getting dressed my tag is right there and I always put it on.

  2. Be friendly to both customers and employees. Customers are more forgiving to your mstakes if you’re friendly, and making friends at work makes the job much more bearable.

  3. Stay calm. Yes, some customers are outright horrible. You’ll make a mistake and they yell, scream and basically humiliate you in front of your coworkers and other customers. In the end, the manager will be more forgiving if they know you’re a good employee and probably won’t write you up. They may even defend you when a customer is out of line.

  4. Don’t complain to customers or employees. It’s amazing what gets back to management.

  5. Appreciate it. A lot of teens and adults can’t catch a break and can’t even get a waitressing job. It sucks when you have to go in on a Saturday night, but it’s worth it when the paycheck comes.
