How to brighten my bling?

I was just wondering if there are any home tricks that I could use to polish my ring up again, rather than taking it to a shop?

It is a white gold puzzle ring with diamonds set all round the ring.

My mum used to clean her jewellery by lining the inside of a bowl with tin foil (dull side up), and putting bits of washing soda in there with her jewellery. Then she’d pour boiling hot water in, and left it til it stopped fizzing, then she’d buff the jewellery with a cloth.
