How serious is pleurisy?

I’ve just been diagnosed with pleurisy today. The doctor said I’ve had it for a year and was caused by a chest infection. It’s really uncomfortable and painful. How serious is it?

Generally, Pleurisy is only as serious as what caused it in the first place. However, once it is cleared up, it is not uncommon to feel the after effects for years to come…

As pleurisy is an infection in the fluid between the lungs and rib cage, (I.e. a chest infection in itself) I don’t understand what your doctor meant by stating it was caused by a chest infection.

chest injuries, and serious illness (like pneumonia and tuberculosis) can be the original cause of the illness in itself.

I wouldn’t worry about it. you’ll be fine.
