How does athletes foot transfer from person to person?

This is random, and kinda gay sounding, but my friend, who has athletes foot, and I were drinking and both ended up falling asleep on the floor, and when I woke up our feet were touching. This last week, my toes have started itching and stuff. My question is, how does something get from inside his toes to inside of mine? Do I really have something that was living inside his feet inside of my own now?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a parasitic fungus and is a communicable disease. It is typically transmitted in moist environments where people walk barefoot, such as showers, bath houses, and locker rooms. It can also be transmitted by sharing footwear with an infected person, or less commonly, by sharing towels with an infected person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlete%27s_foot#Causes
