Answer #1

Yes, you can.

First of all you need to realize that depression (major depression) is a life long illness. That is why it is important to take your medication around the same time every day so that your mood stabilizes. If your medication doesn’t seem to be working then speak to your doctor about switching medications.

Furthermore it is important to eat healthy and start exercising regularly and depression sufferers should especially stay away from alcohol. I always say that treat the illness as if you have diabetes. Take your medication as you should and have an active healthy lifestyle.

My brother suffers from chronic depression and since taking his meds everyday he has been a lot better. It’s really crucial to recovering from it.

Also continue speaking to your therapist, if she/he isn’t working consider trying another one.

And then remember to try and go out with friends and do other activities. It’s going to be tough with you feeling so down, but it also makes a difference.

Answer #2

You are seeking professional help so hopefully you will make some progress.

There are a lot of different approaches to psychiatric treatment and what works for one person might be worthless for the next. Often it is the process of trial and error until you find a combination that works for you.

I recently watched the PBS documentary DEPRESSION:Out of the Shadows. Looks like finding the right medications is the key for most people with serious depression. Depression can be viewed as a shortage of certain neurotransmitters in the brain; anti-depressants increase the amounts of these chemicals. Talk therapy can be effective for depression as well.

Answer #3

How are you getting along with your therapist? Has s/he been helping? Because if you are getting frustrated, remember that there are other therapists, and there are also therapies you can do along side, and there’s other sorts of treatments (like medication). If you dont feel like you’re progressing, you really should consider telling your therapist that.

Answer #4

I really do wish both of you the very best. But keep the therapy in mind. It takes a long time to reverse depression, and it can be the result of a chemical imbalance in the body that needs medication to control. Good Luck!!
