How do I treat my dog's hot spots and constant itching (not fleas)?

My dog is on flea/heartworm medication. He is scratching and pulling out his hair. Scabs and reddening skin. I am using hot spot treatment and shampoo (medicated for itching) that I got at the store. Can’t afford the vet. What can I do?

I’ve used Listerine diluted with sterilized water (1 part Listerine to 2 parts water), in a spray bottle to sooth the itchy raw spots. It stops itching, it promotes healing…and you can keep it on the coffee table and use it when he starts in on himself.

You really do need to find out what’s going on with him…and like Harley, it sounds like allergies to me…could be food, could be contact allergies.

I don’t think Heartworm meds would cause any allergic reactions…but flea remedies can. Dogs can also have flea bite dermatitus (that’s an allergic reaction to flea bites…a double whammy, if there are fleas around…not only do they itch from the bite itself, but they are allergic to it).

you need to figure out what is causing the hot spots. what type of hearworm meds to you use? Does the dog have allergies? They best way to treat these is to have the dog seen by a vet to get pills. The over the counter stuff you are using may just be a waste of your money. We would clean the hot spots up with chlorahexadine (spelling) dilute with water. then put ivermectine on it. The animal would then go home with meds and ecollar to keep them from licking it.
