High risk pregnancy, help?

I’m a 24 year old healthy married woman with a husband who shares in my longing to have a child. The catch…I have bipolar disorder. I have discussed this with a gyno, my psychiatrist, and a high risk preg. Doc. And they all pass the buck… So now it’s your turn… All babies born to two healthy parents have a 1% chance of birth defects. in my having a baby, the risk goes up 9 pts to 10%. lithium is my primary medication. I have read and been told that it can cause cardiac tubal defects etc…but I do not know if that is in conception or what… So does my lamictal-can cause cleft lip. I am taking a few psychotropics for a stable life, and one for hyperthryoidism. I’m sick and tired of the complication…I don’t want to bring something from a bove only to have it destroyed with complications…oh yeah-my chances are 80% of getting preg. Since I just had my mirena removed…anything???

How healthy are you aside from your bi-polar disorder? That should decrease your chances somewhat of your baby having birth defects. The thing is, the chances are there but depression shouldn’t be stopping you from having children if that is what you really want. And if the baby does have a birth defect being prepared will help you cope with it better.

Discuss with your doctor again the effects that your disorder will have on your pregnancy and whether there is anything you can do to reduce the risks or maybe switch to a safer or different medication if possible.
