How high should the distance be when hanging a photograph on top of a fireplace?

Answer #1

About 18 inches above the mantle.

Answer #2

Generally, pictures should be hung so that the centre is roughly at eye level (I say “roughly” because eye level varies from one person to another), however, you should try to maintain a minimum of 8 inches between the fireplace mantel and the bottom of the picture to prevent heat from damaging it.
