Calderoh gave you a prett accurate overview of the disorder…

to answer your question, there is no such thing as being in control of an eating disorder… if you were in control, it wouldnt be a disorder… it could get worse, it could be a one time thing, it’s hard to tell, I mean I had episodes of purging for several years, they’d last about a month… never developed into a fully blown eating disorder… (mainly because I was trying to hurt myself, it was less a body image thing) nonetheless purging is harmful, actually more harmful to the body than anorexia is… the fluctuations in electrolytes is really harmful to the body and can end up killing a person… but again, no way to know really about your friend… you gotta talk to her…

bulimia nervosa is a binge eating disorder followed by an inappropriate “compensation” such as forced vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, a subsequent fast or period of food restriction, or excessive exercising. you are bulimic if you throw up twice a wee for 3 months. otherwise, its considered a sort of binge/purge episode.

“The binge/purge cycle is difficult to understand if you don’t have an eating disorder yourself. The “logical” way to maintain weight is to just eat a healthy diet and exercise in moderation. (Then again, who ever said eating disorders were logical?) But incredibly, some statistics show that about one in four women has tried to use binge eating and purging to lose weight at one time or another. Even if they “only” do it once, that’s a pretty frightening thought.”

“Some people also think that it’s “better” to have bulimia (as opposed to suffering from anorexia) because “at least they are still getting some nutrition” and “they’re still maintaining their weight.” Nothing could be further from the truth! Just because the consequences aren’t always as obvious as those of anorexia doesn’t make them any less severe. For one thing, bulimics often binge on not-so-nutritious foods, which should throw THAT rationale right out the window. Second of all, not all people with bulimia maintain weight… the binge/purge cycle usually causes very large fluctuations in weight that wreak havoc on the person’s metabolism…not to mention their psyche.”

It’s hard to say, on one hand it may be the beginning of an eating disorder, but on the other hand she may just be very good at covering it up. Trust me, I used to have bulimia and anorexia, I have now stopped throwing up but I was so sneaky and no body else found out. I did it for over 2 years. All I can say is tell your friend if she wants to talk then your here for her. Don’t push her into getting help. And don’t get mad at her. It will just make her more sneaky or determined. Trust me, my mum shouted at me when she found out about my e.d and it made it worse. I hope I helped. If you would like anymore information just fun mail me :)
