Tell her you understand her pain, and that you’re very sorry , and if she needs you you’ll be there for her.
Tell her you share her sorrow and give her a suitably chosen “condolences card”.

I would wait to say anything, but that’s just me.

oh i see, and i that case i would tell him that you are there if he needs to vent either though text or on the phone or email or whatever i understad that it doest seem like alot but being far away there isnt alot that you can do i know thats not what you want to hear
