Why did France elect a pro-American?

I wonder why France voted to elect a conservative, pro-American in this election - any insights?

Answer #1

My friend, America has always had a friend in France and France in America. There was only the issue of the Iraq war. Can you tell me of another issue where we have a problem with France at the moment?

Sarkozy will not go against French public opinion by putting French troops in Iraq, of that you can be sure.

I was not denigrating your education. I could not do that not knowing what it is/was. My issue was with your knowledge of the positions of Sarkozy. If you KNEW what those positions were, you would not have asked the question in the way that you did, thus opening yourself to my sharp rebuke (of which I apologize if it did seem too sharp — ahhh, i take it back, after all I dont wan to seem too soft like, you know, the French :-> ).

Obviously you’re not aware of my Educational Background….you should be somewhat familiar with a person before you attempt to put them down and pre-judge what they know or don’t know….your response speaks volumes.

Evidently, Mssr. Sarkozy must have been misquoted over the weekend when he stated “America will find a friend in France”.

Thank you….it takes a Big Person to take an apology back, but I do apologize for not wording my question the way you would have….I do have a lot of faults.

Of course what is considered conservative in Europe would not necessarily be considered conservitive in the US. Chirac was considered a conservative as well.

Sarkozy does seem to be more pro-Washington and pro-Isreal than his predecessor.

My guess is that Sarkozy got elected for many of the same reasons consevatives get elected here. Desire for change, xenophobia and wanting simple solutions for complex issues. Also, the Socialist party probably overplayed their hand and ran too liberal a politician to win.

Answer #5

Mssr. Sarkozy is no more pro-american than any other French politician.

The fact that the French voted for change does not mean that he will come and sit in the president’s lap like Blair did. France is a proud and independent country. Nicholas Sarkozy won by appealing to domestic issues. What are a few of France’s top domestic issues?

  • Jobs and Unemployment
  • Immigration issues
  • Political Scandals

You would actually learn something if you read the latest Wikipedia Article on the french elections which outlined the positions of both candidates. You’d notice that Sarkozy’s positions are to the the left of the democratic party here. By getting outside of the echo chamber of wingnut blogs you might actually learn a new point of view: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_presidential_election,_2007 http://www.ft.com/indepth/frenchelection http://frenchelection2007.blogspot.com/

The most important thing is that Sarkozy has been elected on a platform of competence. Something sadly missing in the American administration today.
