Do you find it wrong when i told my psychiatrist my anti-anxiety medication wasn't working he just told me to "keep taking more untill I feel effect"?

I honestly dont see how this is the way to handel it, do you agree this was the wrong way for him to handel it?

Answer #1

Many times medications like that can take quite some time before they start having an effect. Maybe he thinks you would benefit from giving it a little more time as opposed to switching. I remember when my mother was diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder, and it took around a month for her to start feeling a difference.

Answer #2

Don’t forget that you always have the right as a patient to ask your doctor why he said that. If you don’t agree, or feel comfortable with the decision you can always get a second opinion.

Answer #3

I have my own issues with psychiatrists but I’ll try to leave them out of this. Anti-anxiety meds are supposed to kick in pretty much immediately. But if he gave you an antidepressant (which also sometimes works as anti-anxiety), that takes about 3-4 weeks to start taking effect. I’d give your doctor the benefit of the doubt, especially if it has been less than a month.

Answer #4

depends how long it has been. My boyfriend was on fluoxitine for anxiety and it did help him, but it did take some time before it had that effect. To start with, they made him feel really bad. However, he wasnt put on fluoxitine first, they put him on something else that was not helping him, and his doctor was very reluctant to change his medication. He only did so after a lot of pushing, and it ended up making a big difference.I would give it a go for a bit, but if its still not helping, I would be asking to try something different. There are many different medications prescribed for anxiety and they work differently for different people.

Answer #5

It’s Valium.

Answer #6

Had it been an anti depressant I wouldn’t even be asking, but it’s a Benzo which are extremely addictive and he told me to keep uping the dosage untill I felt relief which I dont find appropriate at all.

Answer #7

Valum should have taken effect very soon after taking it, if you were taking the correct dosage. Sometimes it takes a while and a bit of tweaking to get things right. He may have just started you off on a low dosage to see if it would help. However, if you don’t think it appropriate, its very important that you raise this issue with him.

Answer #8

I know a LOT about medications, especially Benzo’s, i’ve been on every benzo in the book since 6th grade( xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Halcion, list goes on) But having a psychiatrist tell me quote on quote to up the dosage untill I feel relief seems absurd. Their 10mg pills so no it’s not a low dosage.

Answer #9

You found a psychiatrist willing to put a 12 year old on benzodiazepines? Seriously? Any how, if you dont feel like it is the right treatment method, talk to your therapist and find another psychiatrist. I’ve probably seen like 5 or 6 in as many years. I dont last long with any of them.
