When I worked in the pharmacy we often got people with that problem. Too much sun can also cause red eyes which can be excrutiatingly painful. Best is to wear UV protected sunglasses when you are out in direct sunlight.

I've had that happen in the snow before didn't wear sun glasses and didn't comprehend my eyes themselves could burn from the reflection on the snow. My eyes ITCHED LIKE CRAZY! No fun No fun :(
