Can black people get sunburned?

I’m just curious… I know that a friend of my brother once got a real bad sunburn when he fell asleep in the sun. His mother is a white European but his father is a black African. So people who are mixed race obviously do get sunburn. Even in an average, Central European summer. But could a really dark black person who is of purely African heritage get sunburned?

Answer #1

Well both my daughters are half white and half black and they haven’t ever burned, even as babies, but they get a very nice tan that I’m soooo jealous of. I think maybe some of the lighter skin blacks cud possibly get sunburned but I have never personally heard or seen any

Answer #2

Thanx :-)

Answer #3

Welcome

Answer #4

I knew of a girl who was black who got a sunburn. She wasn’t very dark, but she exactly light either. I guess you’d call it medium? But, we live in Texas, not exactly the average central European summer.

Answer #5

black people are adapted for having a lot of sunlight on their skin which is why they are more protected from the sun than white people. But they can still get sunburn if it is extremely hot.

Answer #6

I’m black I’ve never got sunburned (or know anyone whose black that has) but then again I don’t stand in the sun much..its to hott lol

Answer #7

I’m sure they can, maybe you won’t be able to see it, but when they peel, I’m sure you can tell.

Answer #8

I may sound racist here so plz don’t get mad at me but doesn’t black absorb the sun? Wouldn’t make sense for somebody who is black to burn more easily?

Answer #9

Doesn’t snd racist but actually the have more pigment which causes them not to burn :-)

Answer #10

Okay ha ha! It’s just I already had upset Emo people didn’t want to get a bad rep with other people!

Answer #11

Wat ur sayin does technically make sence just so u know :-)

Answer #12

Yeah they can. It’s just less likely and if they do get sunburnt it’s not visible because they are so dark, but it hurts.

Answer #13

HMM The Pigment Is Different.. Probably Not As Easy

Answer #14

Yes they can definitely. In my country due to the sun you often get where they burn when they have been in the sun all day long. That being said however, they don’t burn to the point where they peel, but they definitely can burn. In European countries however they don’t burn at all due to the high levels of pigmentation that they have, they often have a vitamin D shortage due to their much lower absorption of the sun.

Answer #15

They can actually. It depends on where you live and whether they go out in the sun all day. I had a coloured friend who burned extremely badly one day due to being in the sun all day.

Answer #16

i haven’t gotten a sunburn ever??? im not black i’m asian i play footall in the 80F topless for hours but haven’t gotten sunburnt yet??? so i think it depends on individuals.

Answer #17

thank you

Answer #18

I’m a little confused about this answer actually. Why are people who are obviously mixed racial background considered black in the USA? I mean … I once saw a photo of Mr G.W. Bush and Mr Colin Powell standing next to each other and on that photo Mr Bush looked darker than Mr Powell. Why is Colin Powell black while George Buck is white? This confuses me. Another example is Mariah Carey. I wouldn’t have known (from photos) that she’s black if people had not told me…. I don’t mean to hurt anyone, but this is really beyond me. Can someone explain that?

Answer #19

I see. Thanks.

Answer #20

thank you

Answer #21

Okay. Thanks

Answer #22

thank you

Answer #23

So it’s rather rare probably… thank you

Answer #24

Well from what I know all bi racial children aren’t considered black, in my experiance they go by wat the father is, if the father is white and mother black they r considered white, if its vice versa they are considered black, and so on an so on. I hope this makes since, and again its in my experiance

Answer #25

thanx

Answer #26

Welcome, np anytime

Answer #27

Okay. Thank you. But then someone could be black, even though he’s genetically of 99% Central European heritage. And someone could be white even though he is of 99% African heritage. If he had one single ancestor in his fathers line who was of different color than the rest of his ancestors. Well, i guess it’s not necessarily logical. But I can’t think of anyone who is considered white but looks black…. Maybe they did it differently in past generations.

Answer #28

Yeah I think its weird, personally I think its a little confuseing the way it was explained to me and y it is the way it is. Everyone says my children are black, like I said I think its kinda weird the way it is.

Answer #29

Well in the end, it deosn’t matter whether they’re black, white or turquoise… I’ve seen them on your photos and they are beautiful. :-)

Answer #30

Yes. Especially somewhere like my country where the sun is really intense due to lack of ozone. I know several people with really dark skin who have been sunburned

Answer #31

Doesn’t sound racist at all…

Answer #32

But white people burn less easily when they are tanned. So black skin should basically be equal to white skin with a helluva lot of tan. When it comes to sunburns. I just wanted to know whether they can burn at all. Summing up the answers, I’d say some do burn, but most don’t. :-)
