Expository essay is an essay in which you explain a specific topic to someone i.e. to give them a better understanding of it (comes from the word expose) Persuasive essay is an essay which persuades someone of your opinion or viewpoint. A comparison and contrast essay is an essay which compares information and often two conflicting viewpoints with each other.

Expository essays will explain, inform about or describe the subject of the essay to the reader. An essay on something specific, like what happened in WWII, would be an example of this.

Persuasive essays will persuade the reader to join a certain viewpoint (e.g. a political speech) or just persuade the reader why something is good. You need to development a clear argument to show people your viewpoint is good.

A comparative or contrasting essays will talk about two or more things and compare them to one another, it will show the similarities and differences or else talk about the advantages/ disadvantages of something. An example is comparing two texts you have read and how they each put across the idea of childhood (for example).

As ideas you could write an expository explaining why deforestation is harming the environment and the impact it has on animals,. Or you could make it a persuasuve essay and use the facts about it to persuade people to join charities that preserve wildlife.

You could write an expository essay on anything to do with animals really, just explaining something about them.

As a comparative essay you could look at two different ways of doing something, or two different diets you could feed a horse, for example, and argue the pros and cons of each and then come to a general conclusion on which you think is best. This could be something like, should horses be allowed to comete in horse racing, and have arguments like a) it could be dangerous to their health because of whipping, but b) there are now rules in place to protect the horses so it should be ok. a) The running can be bad for their joints and knees and cause a lot of problems, but b) it is good exercise. And so on :)

The expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner. This can be accomplished through comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.Persuasive papers are written to make an argument, much like news stories are these days. Compare-contrast papers simply analyse things and list their similarities and differences, while not making any recommendations toward one or the other, much like new stories are supposed to be.

The biggest difference between the two is persuasive papers don’t include arguments against the writer’s point of view, except perhaps to destroy them, while a compare-contrast paper would, by definition, have to include both sides of any issue. In other words, persuasive is one-sided.
