My wife and I went and lived in Munich for 6 months back in 2006. I sold everything I owned and had $12K when we left. We were very tight on cash. We rented an apartment in a Gastoff (a room above a bar), in Parsburg near a train station for 500 euro a month. For $30 you can climb on the regional trains and travel anywhere within Bavaria (the lower half of Germany). There is easily 6 months worth of stuff to do in Bavaria alone.

Go ahead and count hotels as out of the question. Hostels are very nice places to stay, cheap, and a lot more fun than hotels anyway. I would stay away from Western Europe; I know that sounds weird but the western part of Europe is so westernized that you feel like your in New York most of the time. Spain is a waste, France is a bid NO NO. Italy is ok but watch your belongings, you will get robbed. I liked Germany, Austria, Amsterdam, and Chez the best. The prices were more reasonable and I felt safer.

NOTE: After 3 months you are there illegally so plan any trips out of the EU, like Switzerland, before your 90 day mark.
