They don’t. The labels just refer to taste in clothing and music and being part of the scene/subculture. Of course, there are always people (and a lot of those people are emo or goth) who think it has something to do with a state of mind or a ‘way of life’, who will tell you that emos are more sensitive than others or that goths are more creative or dark, but thinking that is just naïve and immature. There are plenty of people out there who are just as, if not more, ‘dark’, creative or sensitive as any of those people and they do not automatically become goth or emo. Just like there are many goths and emos who are not any of those things.
I do notice a lot of goths tend to act very elitist and think they are superior to other people because they’re more goth than them, but that’s not everyone and isn’t a part of being goth. You get people like that in every subculture. :)
